kimonoDropSend is another in a long line of online sites that lets you send large files, easily. Instead of having to worry about email size limits, dropped connections, or technical FTP stuff, you register for an account, enter the recipient’s email address, and upload the file to DropSend’s server. You can also use a desktop-based uploader (Mac and PC).

Unfortunately, there are many services around just like DropSend, and some, like YouSendIt, have fewer restrictions (no registration, larger files). Now, despite DropSend’s chipper yet disturbing envelope mascot, the people behind it (Carson Systems - Ryan and Gill) are trying to sell the app.

What makes this an interesting Web 2.0 story is that they’re blogging openly about the sale on their Bare Naked App blog, and they’re putting up numbers which many other companies would be reticent about. Today they’ve posted about revenue, costs, and profits - hard figures you won’t often see bandied about in public.

DropSend’s sale has made mention on TechCrunch, and Geoffrey Arrone from Flock has apparently shown interest. It remains to be seen whether DropSend’s tech and open approach can lead to a profitable sale.
